I'm sure some of my readers may have seen the "I Refuse" rant I wrote a couple of days ago. Not totally unexpected no one bothered to comment on it, either because they didn't actually read it, didn't care, or didn't get why exactly this kind of stuff is important. Or maybe I was just ranting on and on boring everyone out of their skull.
Luckily, Bruce Schneier has a way with words and has a very good essay up about the topic. Give it a try people : Security vs. Privacy.

I gotta admit, I only read the articles after reading this post :-D but to be honest, it often seems a "far-from-my-bed" show. In this case, too, it's in the States and I have the same (logical?) reaction as everyone: "of coures, it's in the US again!"
People expect such weird measures to be taken there... of course, what we don't realize, is if it's done there it can eventually be done here. And then people will start panicking and reading your articles and you can go "I told you so!" lol
Anywho, I understand the worrying part of the articles, but what can we little fish do???? That's what I keep wondering about...
Take the Skype thing for example: how do you protect your Skype version from getting monitored? Will there be another (expensive??) software you have to buy in order to ensure your own privacy (probably created by the same people that created the monitoring software) or will this be the responsibility of Skype itself? Cause I know for a fact that people will so not buy any additional software (hell, they won't even buy virusscanners and those are cheap in comparison, some even for free!)

It's not that I don't care about the subject. Quite the contrary. I found your entry to be passionate and interesting. I just didn't feel like typing at the time! :P
